Rodelinda comes to the stage of the Teatro Real for the first time in a new production by one of today’s most acclaimed stage directors: Claus Guth. Ivor Bolton conducts, he is one of the leading names in this repertory. Of all the types of love described in operatic librettos – romantic, prohibited, family, love of power, love of country, or even love of self – the most infrequent is, precisely, conjugal love. Händel found the inspiration for his story in the Queen of Lombardy’s fidelity to her husband. This opera was destined to become one of his most highly regarded pieces from the moment of its 1725 premiere in London and this season it comes to Spain.
