Few musicians bear the title “jazz heavyweight” as well as pianist Randy Weston. A heavyweight aware of his roots anchored deeply in the history of the African-American people. “Without music, we wouldn’t have survived,” he says. And that says it all: the vital energy of his expression, his amplitude and simplicity, his expressive force and humanity. When filming a heavyweight, the camera must be unobtrusive to allow the quality of the moment to genuinely shine through. Such is the aim in “This is Randy Weston”: to show a jazz heavyweight at the height of his expression, and the bond he shared with fellow jazz great, saxophone player Billy Harper.
