Imagine a musician who, every five years, decides that what he is doing is already outdated. Then he starts over. Again. And again.
That man is Miles Davis.
MILES is not just another tribute documentary, nor is it a scholarly chronology for jazz lovers. It is a film about movement, risk, and the courage to abandon what we know in order to see further. A film about an artist who never sought to be modern, but who became so despite himself, systematically.

From Birth of the Cool to Tutu, from bebop to electric fusion, from silence to chaos, Miles Davis invented, burned, and reinvented 20th-century popular music. And above all, he did it with others. Because Miles was not just a solitary genius: he was a talent scout, a conductor who turned musicians into legends, sometimes in spite of themselves.

The film is narrated by those who experienced it from the inside: Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, Mike Stern, Bill Evans, Téo Macero, George Duke… They all recount how Miles created, how he led without ever explaining, how he trusted, how he destabilized in order to help them grow. With Miles, there were no reassuring scores, no instructions: only absolute demands and an implicit question: “What do you have to say now?”

At the heart of the story is a rare and precious thread: the words of Miles himself, taken from a 1990 interview. A lucid, funny, sometimes abrasive, always visionary voice. Miles talks about creation, culture, silence, freedom. And casually reminds us that one note can be too many. The director, Patrick Savey, who witnessed two legendary concerts at Jazz à Vienne (1989 and 1991), brings an intimate and embodied perspective to this film, which is of course intended for jazz lovers, but also for all those who know that to innovate is to accept getting lost, and that true luxury, ultimately, is always being one step ahead.
