From the easternmost tip of Brazil comes a woman who couldn’t be more unmistakable: Lia de Itamaracá. The singer and dancer is an icon of the culture of northeastern Brazil and a key figure in Ciranda, a typical dance of the island of Itamaracá. According to stories, the fishermen’s wives sang and danced the Ciranda while waiting for their husbands to return from the high seas, with the rhythm imitating the coming and going of the waves. However, the repertoire of “Rainha da Ciranda” extends far beyond that to Coco and Maracatu and shows the facets of her rough, warm voice from completely new, unexpected sides.

The Solar – Brazil Music Festival is an event organized by the Adalu association that presents the cultural wealth of Brazil with a fresh, active and conscious approach. At this critical moment for Brazilian culture, when artists are suffering from censorship and lack of support, the Solar Festival seeks to celebrate the gap between popular tradition and modern experimental music.

Artists invited for the third edition are Luiz Gabriel Lopes, Lia de Itamaracá & Band, Yabás (Solar Artistic Residence with Anna Tréa, Dandara Modesto and Jabu Morales), Joanina & Batucada and DJ Sampa, who combines the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture represent. The music ranges from youth, to tradition and the ancestor cult of Brazil as well as the strength, power and daily struggle of Brazilian artists.
