“The jazz-root project has been growing in me since my childhood.
My mother listened to Ti roro and Martha Jean Claude.
She knew the lyrics in Haitian Creole.
So I was introduced to the roots music at the same time as the Guadeloupean Gwoka. But it was only after I recorded my two Gwoka-jazz records, “Sone Ka la” and “Abyss”, that my Haitian friends really fueled my desire, regularly asking me when I was going to look into root music to integrate it into my conception of modern jazz.
These discussions also made me realize that no such work had been done before, and I felt even more motivated to do it.”” Jacques Schwarz-Bart”
