Creations and co-productions parade at the Athens Opera House and its brand new theater (inaugurated in 2017), designed by the master of Italian architecture Renzo Piano. For the eight years of its creation, the company is adding Wozzeck to its repertoire. Olivier Py’s staging is set in a décor by Pierre-André Weitz where rooms and stairs intertwine on a revolving device, in a cycle of continuous curses. Vassilis Christopoulos brings cohesion and balance to this atonal score (which challenges the “grammar” of traditional tonal music), while the national star Tassis Christoyannis triumphs in the title role alongside Nadine Lehner with a sumptuous low tone.
