Since the war began on February 24, 2022, many Ukrainians have joined the army to defend their country, while others have been forced into exile to save their lives. The Dakh Daughters embody a third path: the fight “from the outside,” using their own weapons—art—to carry the voice of the Ukrainian people through wild, cathartic music.
After spending several weeks under bombardment in Kyiv, sheltering in missile-proof basements, these five women made the decision to exile themselves to Normandy to lay out their battle plans. They began touring with a new show: Ukraine Fire. Between concerts, they don’t return home, but instead go back to their place of exile in Vire, Normandy.
Their political commitment is a powerful testament to art as a weapon of mass awareness.
