The charismatic Anton Newcombe and his henchmen from The Brian Jonestown Massacre are back in Saint-Malo!
Legends in the making: Anton Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre kick off the Route du Rock with their album The Future is Your Past.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre was born in San Francisco, on the Pacific coast. At the origin of the project? The incomparable Anton Newcombe. Although the band has evolved enormously since its inception in the ’90s, he still fervently assumes his role as charismatic leader.
Hosted on an in-house label – A-Recordings – The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s music tends to be psychedelic. Over the decades, however, this psychedelic base has been enriched by numerous influences ranging from folk to new-wave and shoegaze. This musical richness and the figure of Anton Newcombe have profoundly influenced a whole generation of artists. Their legendary status is underlined by a documentary released in 2004: “DiG!”, directed by American Ondi Timoner.
As paragons of proudly independent music, Newcombe and his cohorts see each new opus as a thumbing of their noses at the majors. With over twenty studio albums under their belts, it’s fair to say that The Brian Jonestown Massacre are rather provocative. This discography was further enriched in 2023 with The Future is Your Past, a new album that the Americans unpacked at La Route du Rock.
