Formed in the mid-1950s to showcase the compositions of the eccentric American keyboardist Sun Ra, the orchestra has traversed decades by embracing a vast array of influences—from bebop and electronic music to spiritual jazz, blues, and wild improvisation. Since the death of its leader in 1993, the Sun Ra Arkestra has tirelessly carried the torch, delivering captivating concerts and releasing new recordings. Amid a wave of reissues and live captures—most recently _Nuits de la Fondation Maeght_, featuring the legendary August 1970 concerts in Saint-Paul-de‑Vence—the Arkestra has also introduced fresh material. Over the past five years, they’ve experienced a renaissance, releasing three remarkable studio albums: _Swirling_ (2020), _Living Sky_ (2022), and _Lights On a Satellite_ (2024). The group’s music has never sounded more lush and expansive than it does today.
