Roberto Fonseca has built one of the richest musical journeys. Close to the late Ibrahim Ferrer, the sublime singer of the Buena Vista Social Club, and involved in projects such as _At Home_ with Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, the Havana-born pianist has always been open to different approaches to music. This is evident in his work with the Brownswood label, remixing for producer and DJ Gilles Peterson, and of course throughout his own discography, which unfolds as a truly captivating musical universe.
The three pieces featured here eloquently sum up Roberto Fonseca’s sources of inspiration. He opens this solo set with “Mercedes,” taken from his latest album, the intoxicating _La Gran Diversión_. Built on subtle harmonies, this dreamy theme invokes the new generation of jazz pianists as well as the French classical repertoire of the twentieth century, itself fascinated by Hispanic rhythms. Performed on keyboards, “Aggua” celebrates the union of Latin production and electronic energy, a seductive approach that conjures powerful imagery and the strong visual appeal of this repertoire. Finally, “Cadenas” makes a sharp turn with a deliberately danceable synthetic beat. First performed some years ago with singer Danay Suárez, this piece brings the Analogue session to a close with flair.
