As a testament to the evils of slavery, gwo ka music and its accompanying dance have, in recent decades, found valuable champions in Luc-Hubert Séjor and Erick Cosaque, as well as in Kassav’s early recordings. Originating in Guadeloupe, this Afro-descendant culture is symbolized by the ka drums, whose daily playing accompanies life’s joys and sorrows. Carefully codified, these instruments and the perspectives or tributes they evoke are now experiencing a revival through the ExpéKa collective, thanks to drummer Sonny Troupé’s arrangements, Casey’s uncompromising flow, and Célia Wa’s melodies.
