Described as “one of the world’s finest quartets,” the Modigliani Quartet takes the stage at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall to perform the greatest masterpieces of chamber music by Mozart and Ravel, for the third edition of the Thessaloniki International Chamber Music Festival!
In this concert, it is Mozart’s String Quartet No. 3 in G major that opens the programme! Taken from his cycle of six Milanese Quartets, composed between 1772 and 1773 when he was only about 16, the work shows Classical influence with inspiration from Haydn’s quartet model, to which Mozart brings all his modernity and innovative spirit.
With Ravel too, innovation lies at the heart of the creative process: submitting his String Quartet in F major for a composition prize earned him his _second_ expulsion from the Paris Conservatory – it must be said that at the time, his unconventional, modernist ideas were often divisive among critics! Deeply influenced by Debussy’s vibrant and colorful compositions, however, the quartet succeeded in winning public affection and quickly became the composer’s first major success.
