For several years, flautist Naïssam Jalal has revealed a personal and vibrant musical universe which, both in substance and in form, gives new meaning to the word freedom. Nominated for the Victoires du Jazz 2018, Naïssam Jalal was born in Paris, to Syrian parents. She began playing the classical flute at the age of 6. At 19, Naïssam left to study nay and classical Arabic music in Damascus, then in Cairo where she lived for 3 years. From rap to contemporary jazz, from tango to Afrobeat, Naïssam plays across all boundaries. We found him alongside the big names of French and international jazz (Hamid Drake, Mederic Collignon, Anne Paceo, etc.), Arab music (Fathi Salama, Aziz Sahmaoui, Hazem Shaheen, etc.), musicians from West Africa (Cheikh Tidiane Seik, Abdoulaye Traore, etc.) or even American hip hop (Mike Ladd, Napoleon Maddox, etc.). She records with artists from all walks of life in France, Egypt and Lebanon, and composes the music for four feature films.
Naïssam Jalal brought together pianist Leonardo Montana and double bassist Claude Tchamitchian in search of the Invisible. This new repertoire is at the crossroads of extra-Western and traditional mystical music and modal jazz. Silence has a central place, the rhythm always leads towards trance in a repetitive and hypnotic form, sometimes the voice comes to lend a hand to the instruments to come into contact with the Invisible by naming it. A creation that oscillates between contemplation and trance, silence and music. For several years, flautist Naïssam Jalal has revealed a personal and vibrant musical universe which, both in substance and in form, gives new meaning to the word freedom. In constantly renewed research and curiosity, she shines with her virtuoso ability to weave links between different musical cultures and aesthetic fields. Commitment through and in music, creation as a means of expressing one’s interiority: these are the guidelines of his multiple artistic projects which have never ceased to surprise thanks to their originality, their authenticity and their artistic qualities. Since 2011, Naïssam Jalal has performed in France and abroad at the most prestigious festivals with his quintet Rhythms of Resistance. In 2015, she also founded the group Al Akhareen with Palestinian rapper Osloob. Finally in 2017 she created the trio Quest of the Invisible. Leader of these three groups, Naïssam Jalal builds a repertoire in his image, free and nomadic.
