Born in Paris and living in Ibiza, Austrian saxophonist Muriel Grossmann released her album Devotion last winter – a long-playing record with over an hour and a half of music – with a sixties/seventies-inspired cover. A period which corresponds to the instrumental formula chosen, an organ-combo typical of the late 1960s. But this is less soul-jazz than a power-trio whose energy borrows as much from blues-rock as from John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, as the theme of his composition ‘Mother of All’ suggests. On tenor, Muriel Grossmann develops a full, taut sound with incredible energy.
