Founded in London in the early ’80s by Mauritian-born guitarist and producer Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick and the late bassist Paul Tubbs Williams, Incognito spearheaded the acid jazz movement and has recently seen its innate sense of hybridity and cross-fertilisation revived. Over the years, Incognito has become less a group and more a kind of collective, with the feel of a nursery for young talent. True to its principles, Incognito’s music is as seductive and cheeky as ever, revitalising and revitalising the fundamentals of a jazz culture that has been perfectly assimilated into the rhythms and sounds of today’s soul and pop movements.
