“Ibrahim Maalouf and Frank Woeste’s arrangements of one of Oum Kalthoum’s greatest hits, Alf Leila wa Leila (The Thousand and One Nights), color this superb Oriental intoxication with jazz sounds.
In 2012, Ibrahim Maalouf added a very special line to his discography: Wind. A tribute to the famous score composed by Miles Davis for Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, the album brought together a delicate Franco-American quintet: saxophonist Mark Turner, drummer Clarence Penn or pianist Frank Woeste. As a result, the young trumpet player won the Victoire du Jazz award for musician of the year. Three years later, when it came to reinventing Oum Kalthoum’s hypnotic Alf Leila wa Leila (The Thousand and One Nights) (one of his Proust’s Madeleines), the Beirut native naturally turned to the same dream team to succeed in bringing together the vertigo of the oriental tradition and the frenzy of jazz improvisation.
