With their signature blend of irreverence and grandiloquence, Cradle of Filth brought their symphonic black metal to the Temple stage at Hellfest.
Founded in 1991 in Suffolk, Cradle of Filth released their debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, three years later. After this first milestone, the band’s style continued to evolve.
The band’s music draws on a host of genres (black, death, dark…) and even allows itself some electronic accents. All this is matched by Dani Filth’s tortured vocals, which rise to extreme highs only to fall back to cavernous grunts. While some of the band’s albums have left some circumspect, Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa (2010), Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay (2017) and Existence is Futile (2021) have reunited the band with their diehard fans.
Whether you love them or hate them, Cradle of Filth are one of black metal’s essential bands. From the outset, Dani Filth’s band have taken gothic imagery to the extreme. It’s a grand-guignolaisque aspect that’s totally accepted and frankly enjoyable. Looking for a show? Cradle of Filth will give you one!
