Angel Bat Dawid is an American spritual jazz composer and vocalist born in 1979. In 2014, she joined the jam sessions of Sonic Healing Ministries, an organization founded by saxophonist David Boykin, and discovered the improvised music of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which shook up her artistic practice. She decided to “become a full-time musician” and co-founded the Participatory Music Coalition, a gathering of young Chicago musicians for improvisation sessions. Many of them play and commune with her in Tha Brothahood, the band that accompanies her on stage. In half a decade, Angel Bat Dawid has become one of the cornerstones of the Chicago jazz and improvised music scene, a major voice against racial discrimination. Her recordings and writing are informed by many strands of Black American music and the sound traditions of the African diaspora. In 2019, she released The Oracle recorded on a laptop around the world and for which she performs all the instruments. This Do It Yourself soundtrack borrows from free jazz and gospel, hip hop and electronic music. The same year, LIVE, a sound manifesto, was released.
