Togo’s Nana Benz quintet take the Nuits de Fourvière by storm in their neo-voodoo world. A fitting way to discover AGO, the group’s debut album.

Let’s start with a bit of etymology: the term ‘nana benz’ refers to the Togolese women who prospered in the wax trade in the 50s and 60s. With such a name, the aim of Nana Benz du Togo is clear: to celebrate African women.

Nana Benz du Togo is made up of three female singers and two musicians. From Lomé, the capital of Togo, the quintet lends its voice to the women of the African continent. In its songs, Nana Benz du Togo combats patriarchy and campaigns for a world that is more respectful of the Earth.

Together, the five members of Nana Benz du Togo combine voodoo songs, funk and electro… As priests as well as musicians, they combine the festive and the committed with disconcerting naturalness.
