Master of the Oud, singer and composer, Dhafer Youssef is at the forefront of a contemporary music movement that brings East and West together. He is one of the most inventive Oud players in the world, and has succeeded in freeing the instrument from its traditional role by introducing it to jazz. He learned his first musical rudiments from his grandfather, singing verses from the Koran, before making his voice resound from the top of the minaret at the age of 5.
For his album “Sounds of Mirror”, he brought together Zakir Hussein, an Indian percussionist whom he sees not just as a tabla player, but as a vocal character through his percussion, Turkish clarinettist Husnu Senendirici and the faithful Elvin Aarset on guitar. A collaboration that gives rise to a treasure trove of sensations, a veritable meditative and spiritual refuge.
