“Erik Truffaz has always freed himself from the chapels to propose a boiling and learned alchemy between jungle, be-bop, drum’n bass, even hip hop. Cosmojazz wanted to give this fundamentally free artist, who also loves the mountains, carte blanche. The only constraints, a blue mountain lake and a completely natural acoustic. For this adventure, the trumpet player wanted to return to the sources of the breath, and remembered an adventure in New York.
It was 20 years ago, as part of a tour called “Swiss Jazz Movements”. Erik and a musician friend, Jean Jacques Pedretti, were doing the rounds in New York, blowing on the lawn of Washington Square. A curious policeman, probably nostalgic for the sixties, asked them if these two huge instruments were schilum. They were indeed alphorns. Nourished by this memory, Erik took his trumpet to Chamonix, but also an alpine horn, and invited his old trombonist friend, a high-flying improviser and hijacker of alpine horns, as well as the drummer Philippe Garcia from Lyon with whom he shared many adventures (Ladyland 4tet, Erik Truffaz & Sly Johnson). The three musicians will become poets of the peaks to pay tribute to the beauty of the site by improvising a concert whose influences promise to be multiple, between hip hop, dub, ragas and jazz. The alpine horn will be put to the test and will chant urban and groovy bass lines, underlined by the unstoppable groove of the drums and the melodies of the trumpet.”
