In Wunderkammer, Spanish choreographer and director Marcos Morau creates a dramatic dance piece that places memory and identity at the heart of his work. Inspired by the idea of the cabinet of curiosities—the Wunderkammern—he transforms it into a theatrical experience: a stage like a modern-day Wunderkammer becomes a dream factory where the unexpected unfolds, images ignite, and emotions distill.
Marcos Morau is a master of parallel worlds, where opposites merge into one another. His productions feed on surprise and the metamorphosis of movement into visual drama at the crossroads of dance, theater, visual arts, and cinema. Here, he reimagines the Wunderkammer as a theatrical space of wonder that questions identity and opens up new perspectives.
Morau’s visual language feeds on contrasts—between chaos and structure, chance and order, control and freedom. “It’s about creating layers of meaning without prescribing a single interpretation.“ But Morau goes beyond simple wonder. Historically, Wunderkammern were not only spaces of curiosity, but also of control, imposing a Eurocentric view of the world and creating hierarchies. ”
I wonder what a Wunderkammer of inclusion and transformation might look like,” he explains. His work raises questions: How do we construct reality? What stories remain hidden within us? And how can theater become a space that opens up new perspectives?
With Wunderkammer, Marcos Morau creates a poetic and generous scene that oscillates between past and present. His intimate cabinet of curiosities is a space of dreams and doubts, inviting the audience to revisit their memories, experiences, and collective perceptions.
