When you kick off your concert with an original track called “Old Skool Funk,” you’d better deliver. Fortunately, Matt Johnson, a longtime member of the famous acid-jazz band Jamiroquai, has confidence to spare! He kicks things off with a long, trippy keyboard solo at the ultra-trendy Parisian club La Petite Halle, where Qwest TV has the honor of presenting the band behind Johnson’s latest album, Warrior Princess. “Old Skool Funk,” with its inspiring lyrics about perseverance, is an excellent introduction to this guitar, bass, and drum ensemble accompanying three vocalists—Hazel Fernandes, Valérie Etienne, and Romina Johnson—in what is both a return to their roots and a revitalization of the legendary sound of the 1970s.

The concert maintains a rather mellow vibe with other tracks from their 2025 album, notably the mid-set rendition of “It’s Too Late,” where Johnson’s clear voice gradually gains intensity and features a flute performance by their guest Brian Jackson, the late Gil Scott-Heron’s writing partner. Later, the even more striking funk of “Interstellar Love” prompts three young women in the audience to break into a choreographed dance.
