Because he lives in Harlem, uncontested capital of the black-American world since the interwar period, this pianist of Texan origin recently saw himself ordering a celebration of one of the big original harlemite creators, the pianist Fats Waller.
Instead of being inspired by the very particular style of the latter, Moran chose to highlight Waller’s unpredictable by making live music, dance and theatricality with this sense of the impressionism that he borrows, by his own admission, as much from Maurice Ravel as from Jean-Michel Basquiat.
