“Young prodigy of 25 years, pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa was born into a large family of musicians, the most famous of which are his uncle Ernan, a pianist, and his father Ruy, who is a drummer. After beginning classical piano studies at the age of eight, he acquired the skills of a multi-talented instrumentalist. He played Ravel and Villa-Lobos with symphony orchestras, and accompanied Omara Portuondo on her international tours.
At the age of twenty, he turned to a career as a jazz pianist, which began with a flurry of awards and competitions — including a brilliant distinction in 2005 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where he won First Prize in the solo piano competition.
Harold Lopez-Nussa has recorded three CDs in three years, the first one (Sobre el Atelier) as a soloist in the wake of Montreux, then Canciones, recorded as a quartet in Havana, and this one, made in France, with the eloquent title: “Héritage. He is accompanied, on the stage of the Martinique Jazz Festival, by his father Ruy on drums, Felipe Cabrera on double bass, and a guest on saxophone: David Sanchez”.
