Cuban-born pianist and composer David Virelles grew up in a musical household. He began learning the piano at an early age, immersing himself in the many Cuban musical traditions and discovering jazz greats such as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Andrew Hill. After recording with Juan Pablo Torres and Jane Bunnett in Cuba, Virelles graduated from Toronto’s Humber College and moved to New York in 2009, where he studied composition with Pulitzer Prize-winner Henry Threadgill. Since then, he has collaborated with musicians* as diverse as Andrew Cyrille, Bill Frisell, Chris Potter, Tomasz Stanko, Wadada Leo Smith, Hermeto Pascoal, Ravi Coltrane, Marcus Gilmore and many others.
