“A car mechanic by trade, Christian Lavisio is originally from Pointe-à-Pitre (where he still lives) and is one of the most original guitarists in France. Inspired by modern gwoka, his mixed jazz is one of those that you don’t hear often. Robert Latxague explained it in Jazz Magazine (June 2009): “The art of Laviso and his guitareka (contraction of guitar and ka, the Guadeloupean drum) is based on an osmosis between percussion and ostinato patterns played on the strings, which is presented as a transfer of the island’s drumming traditions. Laviso adds songs from the lewoz, festive gatherings that involve improvised exchanges of vocal incantations and percussive responses.
