Harshly criticized by pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, to whom Tchaikovsky had first presented the score, the _Piano Concerto No. 1_ is nonetheless a masterpiece—an extraordinary work that elevates the dialogue between soloist and orchestra into a dazzling musical fireworks display. It is among Beatrice Rana’s cherished pieces, one she recorded beautifully in 2015.
