1349 is the year the Black Death spread across Europe… and incidentally a Norwegian black metal band. True purists, the members of 1349 decided to get together to return to the roots of black metal, at a time when the style was becoming increasingly popular in Scandinavia. Formed in 1997, the band experienced a turning point with the arrival of the mythical Frost. Liberation, released in 2003 on Candlelight Records, is the first offspring of this union. Violent, underground and fast-paced, 1349’s style was like a bomb.

With 2009’s Revelations of the Black Flame, the band surprised fans with an ambient-tinged sound. Back to basics a few years later with Demonoir, is a fine blend of the hateful black metal that made their success and these new influences. The opuses Massive Cauldron of Chaos (2014) and The Infernal Pathway (2019) drive home this return to basics and establish 1349 as ayatollahs of the purest Nordic tradition.
