The great Vietnamese pianist Dang Thai Son, winner of the 1980 Chopin Competition and a rare performer in Switzerland, appears together with four of his students: Sophia Liu, JJ Jun Li Bui, Zitong Wang, and Kai-Min Chang. Students at the New England Conservatory and Oberlin College in the United States, these young prodigies, aged between 16 and 24, are already winners of numerous international prizes.
Born in Hanoi in 1958 and trained at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Dang Thai Son won first prize at the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Since then, he has pursued a distinguished international career, collaborating with leading orchestras and conductors, and performing with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Pinchas Zukerman. He has recorded extensively for Deutsche Grammophon, CBS Sony, Victor JVC, and Analekta. A renowned pedagogue as well, Dang Thai Son is a professor at the New England Conservatory in Boston and at Oberlin College, and he is regularly invited to serve on the juries of major international competitions.
