A talented singer with a style that blends both melancholy and mischief, Thomas Dutronc found success right from the start: his debut album went gold just two months after its 2007 release. But while his musical path may seem like a family calling, it’s worth remembering that he began his journey as a jazz guitarist, cutting his teeth in clubs and on small stages, learning the ropes in the fine tradition of gypsy jazz rhythm playing.
Young Thomas approached swing guitar with humility, learning from seasoned players within the gypsy jazz community. Romane was the first to guide him, followed by Biréli Lagrène, who brought him into his “Gipsy Project.” It was also through his guitar that he won over the wider public, lending his swing to The Triplets of Belleville alongside his childhood friend -M-. Even as he developed his own unique path, the guitarist never lost sight of Django Reinhardt’s music, whose joyful energy still pulses through many of his songs.
Now, on the stage of the Théâtre Antique, he’ll be joined by two of the brightest stars of the genre, the quietly brilliant Rocky Gresset and Stochelo Rosenberg, who, for once, will be stepping away from his usual trio to become part of a different kind of family. Three guitars and one voice to reinterpret songs by Dutronc père, timeless tracks from Thomas Dutronc’s Frenchy album, and some of the finest pieces from the gypsy jazz repertoire.
