He is recognised as the world’s best player of the Ngoni, a West African lute: Bassekou Kouyaté. No wonder, then, that the greatest like Youssou Ndour, Bono, Santana and Dee Dee Bridgewater have engaged him for their projects. On the new album «Miri» (2019) Kouyaté again totally leaves aside his electrical sound effects and displays a more thoughtful, acoustic side. Without bowing in the direction of Western listening habits, their sound combines the traditional Griot music from Mali with Blues and Rock’n’Roll. His wife and songstress Amy Sacko is described as Mali’s Tina Turner. Together as a sextet, they provide a spectacular, rhythmically strong and expressive performance of the pentatonic music of Mali.
