Tosca by Giacomo Puccini at Teatro Real Madrid

Melodrama in three acts
Music by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
A co-production of Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville
Principal Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real

Starring Joseph Calleja, Carlos Álvarez and the great Sondra Radvanovsky.

That in this veristic melodrama of rivalries, politics, thwarted passions, and brutal outcome the words “honor” or “revenge” are never once said gives an idea of Puccini’s intentions to transcend and renew the framework of Italian melodrama as well as the Verismo style. Proof of this is the almost cinematographic pace of the dramatic action, the abundance of leitmotiv examples and the massive orchestration which reaches its heights in scenes like the «Te Deum» or the interrogation scene. Under the iron hand of sinister Scarpia, the lovers Tosca and Cavaradossi are unable to raise their voices except to express discouragement and defeat, portrayed as victims. They are fully-fledged creations of a century which witnessed the birth of the modern totalitarian state, mass destruction and genocide.

First seen at the Teatro Costanzi of Rome in 1900, to this day Tosca is one of the most popular and incombustible of operas. Suitable for all tastes, it comes to the stage of the Teatro Real in the production of Paco Azorín, which premiered at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. This is a vibrant and explicit version, set on a revolving stage accompanied by video projections.

La Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossini

Available for prebuy
Dramma giocoso in two acts, on a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti
after the tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault
created on January 28, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome.

In Italian, with French subtitles

To create this jubilant, phenomenally energetic two-act musical extravaganza, Rossini asked his librettist Jacopo Ferretti to strip Perrault’s tale of its fairy tale elements. True to his reputation, he created a comic triumph in only three weeks: of Don Magnifico’s three daughters, Clorinda, Tisbé and Angelina (known as Cenerentola), which one is the most beautiful and generous? Faced with her two pesky sisters, Angelina will be able to guide the choice of Prince Ramiro, in search of the ideal woman. Still, it will be necessary to find Angelina after her precipitated departure of the ball. A clue should however put him on the way to facilitate the reunion of the lovers and the triumph of happiness. For this new production Alicia Geugelin returns to the Opera Orchestra, after her breathtaking staging of Virility.e.s, to bring out the explosive vitality of this Cenerentola.

– Paolo Bordogna: Don Magnifico
– Serena Saenz: Clorinda
