Cody ChessnuTT at Sons d’Hiver 2014

Cody Chesnutt’s warm and powerful voice, mastering every nuance from the muted to the bright, wonderfully done every time. Not without malice, ChesnuTT likes to remind you to put soul into mainstream music, since it has lost its soul… and his favorite themes within the immemorial tradition of the blues: all aspects of daily life and parallel lives, social misery undermined by hopes undermined by social misery, loneliness and love… So many reasons to participate in our turn to this feast.

Benoît Delbecq & Andy Milne at Jazzdor 2011

At the heart of the collaboration of Benoit Delbecq and Andy Milne is a place: the Banff Center, an artists’ residence in Ontario. This is where the two young pianists meet in the early 90s, around the alto saxophonist Steve Coleman. This is also where they are found, 20 years later. It was then their turn to share their experiences, acquired from traveling around the globe, to young musicians.
At the heart of this privileged place, where is created a whole fringe of contemporary jazz, comes to life the idea of a piano duo. Then operates a mix of innovative culture and magical, an unprecedented dialogue between the experimental hacks of Benoit Delbecq (supporter – among others- prepared keyboards) and the African-American sound (hip-hop to Cuban music) of Andy Milne.

Line-up:
Benoit Delbeq (piano) & Andy Milne (piano)

Archie Shepp & Joachim Kühn at Jazzdor 2011

« Still crazy after all these years… » – They had to meet, it’s finally done. Both veterans at “Impulse! “Archie Shepp and Joachim Kühn, end up in Frankfurt for a brilliant duo. On the one hand, an African-American who in the complex sound of his saxophone, vibrates in the groundswell painful stories of his people, on the other, the pianist of Old Europe, who combines JS Bach to free jazz: they interpret as many standards as their own compositions with a saxophone playing tenor whose oscillation between an address wan to the afterlife and an interpellation of senses, between the melody and the cry, it is an art of sound among the most analyzed in the history of jazz.

Line-up:
Archie Shepp (saxophone) Joachim Kühn (piano)

Archie Shepp, Melvin van Peebles & The Heliocentrics at Jazz à la Villette Festival 2015

On the occasion of the Jazz à La Villette Festival, the British collective The Heliocentrics bring together two great artists and major players of African-American culture: Archie Shepp and Melvin Van Peebles. The former is a saxophonist and one of the key figures of the Great Black Music, the latter is a renowned filmmaker and a pioneer of the Blaxploitation, an American film genre featuring, in the leading roles, African American actors.
Guided by the spiritual power of the charismatic Sun Ra, the Heliocentrics keep playing their part as a link between genres and generations. After performing for years with the Ethio-jazz icon Mulatu Astatke, they embarked on a new adventure alongside Mevin Van Peebles in 2014, with the album The Last Broadcast, a nebulous opus composed of 12 hypnotic music tracks.

Revealed in 2013 with the album WomanChild, Cécile McLorin Salvant is impressing with vocal mastery. Her vocal technique combined with a great sense of rhythm had her win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Wynton Marsalis and Archie Shepp also succumbed to the charms of her songs inspired by blues, French and American songs. Not bad for an artist who is only 25!
