Charlie Parker – Bird With Strings Revisited live at Jazz at the Philharmonie 2019

For the young producer Norman Granz, Charlie Parker’s signature on the Mercury label was a real success. The saxophonist had been thinking for a few years about the opportunity to record music outside his usual quintet. The project “Charlie Parker with Strings” was thus, for him, an old dream that he realized in 1949. With an oboe, a few violins, a viola, a cello, a harp, a piano, a double bass and drums, he gave a new sound to the classics of the 1930s such as “Just Friends” and “April in Paris.”

Jazz at the Philharmonie celebrates this superb encounter by bringing together some of the most talented saxophonists (Géraldine Laurent, Pierrick Pédron, Thomas de Pourquery, Jaleel Shaw and Olivier Bogé) on new arrangements by Christophe Dal Sasso.
