Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Jean-Guihen Queyras / Rosas “Notes du travail”

On August 26 2017, Mitten wir im Leben sind/Bach6Cellosuiten, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s latest performance, premiered at the Ruhrtriennale in the Maschinenhalle Zweckel in Gladbeck. Thanks to the ingenious architecture, the dance-like rhythmic structure and their timeless beauty, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cellosuites are being considered a landmark in the history of Western music. Anne Teresa De Keersmaekers affinity with Bach has been apparent in previous performances. She strives for a choreographic manner of writing that grasps Bach musical language. In this performance, the six suites, interpreted by world renowned cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, are danced by three male and two female dancers, among whom De Keermaeker herself. The fascinating symbiosis between music and dance uncovers both the nature of each of the suites separately as their mutual interaction within the cycle as a whole. Filmmakers Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes have been filming the rehearsals in Rosas Brussels’ studios and in the period before the opening night in Gladbeck.

The film ‘’Notes du Travail’’ will be a documentation of the unique work process in which De Keersmaeker and the dancers, by means of an in-depth analysis of the partition and together with Queyras, search for a dramaturgical and chorographical ‘translation’, adaptation and inquiry in and of Bach’s Cellosuites.
